The #1 Reason You are Unhealthy

ConsistencyIt turns out that common sense isn’t all that common.  So I decided to write about something that really should be self evident but based on what is common in our unhealthy, out of shape society…it’s NOT.

Don’t know?  Just ask Google…

We live in the information age.  I’m old enough (just barely), to remember what it was like to go to the library and dig through the stupid little card system (Thanks Dewey!) trying to find a book that may or may not have the information you need/want.  What a pain in the neck!  But that’s not the case now.  Now you just jump on your computer…pull up Google (or Bing if you feel like being a rebel) and ask a question.  Google spits out about a million different sites that have the answer.  Pretty cool.

So if we have such easy access to health information, why are we so unhealthy?  The United States especially is so horribly unhealthy.  Now that doesn’t mean our doctors and hospitals are crap…but they aren’t really health care providers.  They are disease/trauma patchers and fixers.  Basically, they would be really awesome at putting Humpty Dumpty back together, but they wouldn’t do a damn thing about keeping him from falling off the wall.  In fact…they might push him…but that’s another story all together.

You know…really…you do…

So in spite of what you might think, people really do know what to do to be fit and healthy.  A lack of information is really not the problem.  Now, how to MAXIMIZE your body potential isn’t exactly common knowledge.  There are little tweaks and tricks that can help you squeeze every ounce of what your genetics have to offer.  But most people aren’t in a position to worry about maximizing their body because they aren’t even close to being healthy and fit as they should be.

Now I’ve said for years that the reason people are unhealthy and out of shape is because they make bad choices.  And that’s true.  But the REAL problem…the #1 Reason people are unhealthy is NOT that they make bad choices.  It’s that they CONSISTENTLY make bad choices.

"The #1 Reason people are unhealthy is NOT that they make bad choices.  It’s that they CONSISTENTLY make bad choices"

The bottom line is this…what you see in the mirror, how you feel when you get up in the morning, your energy level, your waistline…all of those things are simply the sum of your choices.  You don’t have to live a life void of Ding Dongs and Ho-Ho’s.  You don’t have to give up your favorite snack or drink.  Being healthy and fit isn’t about cutting out every indulgence that life has to offer.  But if you want to look like someone who eats pizza every day…eat pizza every day.  If you want to look like someone who exercises and takes good care of themselves…do THAT every day.

Just Keep Swimming…Just Keep Swimming…

You know better.  You can look at a menu and make a better choice.  You can make a better choice when it comes to buying groceries.  You can take 15 minutes out of your day to exercise.  You don’t need any special equipment.  You don’t need a professional chef.  You don’t need anything special.  What you DO NEED is to do what you already know to do and DO IT CONSISTENTLY.  Because if you do…the person in the mirror…will start looking like it (and feeling like it).

Get to work!
