How Much Sugar are you Eating?

Ignorance is Bliss…that is unless we are talking about your health.   In the case of your health…ignorance will kill you.  It’s awareness that is bliss.  It has been shown time and time again that the more aware people are about their health and their choices, the more likely they are to make better choices.

Now there are a million different ways to improve your own health awareness.  Two very simple and effective ones are keeping a journal and reading labels.  The trouble with being a label reader is that if you don’t know what you are looking at…what good is it?

 Sugar…Sugar…And More Sugar…

Even though sugar tastes amazing we consume entirely too much.  It is estimated that the average American consumes 156 lbs of sugar each year.  THAT’S 156 LBS!!  We really need to start cutting back and the first step is awareness.  So the next time you pick up something to eat or drink and you take a look at the label…remember this…4 grams of sugar = 1 sugar packet.

So when you see that cookie you are eyeballing has 40g of sugar…that’s 10 packs of sugar.  When you go to drink that 20 oz Coca-Cola and read the label…a little math gets you to 18 packets of sugar.  18 in 20 0z of beverage!  That’s a lot.

Balance…

Now I’m not saying you have to completely cut out sugar.  But you become aware of how much sugar you are eating because you will start making better choices.  And that’s what health is about…making better choices.  As a general rule…you will never put as much sugar in something you make yourself that the food/drink manufacturers will put in it at the factory (especially drinks).

And if you are looking for a good sugar alternative, try Stevia.  Artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame) are terrible for you and ARE NOT a healthy alternative to sugar.

Honorable Mention…
