You Have to Keep Going Back – Is it the Chiropractor’s Fault?

After spending 9 years in private practice, I’ve heard just about every bad thing that has every been said about chiropractors.  Sadly…a lot of it is true.

Bad Rep…

Now maybe not with each individual doctor.  There are definitely are some good ones out there, but as a profession…let’s just say we need some work.  Chiropractors have worked very hard over the years to earn their bad reputation, but one of the biggest dings against chiropractors really isn’t their fault.  Let me explain…

Once you go…

Stop me if you have heard this…“Once you go to a chiropractor…”  See…I don’t even have to say it.  You know what’s coming next.  “Once you go to a chiropractor, you just have to keep going back.”

Their Fault…

It’s one of the biggest complaints about chiropractors.  And maybe on the surface, it is a little bit of the chiropractors fault.  I’ve always been very outspoken about the quality of chiropractic care.  And although it’s true that the amount of care that each person needs is different, the better your chiropractor is at his craft…the less care you will need.  So yes…if every chiropractor was focused on giving the highest level of care possible…you wouldn’t have to go back as much.  I’ll give you that.

Your Fault…

But now let’s talk about you.  It’s your body.  Are you helping?  Do you do anything other than go the chiropractor to help your neck and back?  Do you stretch?  Are you posture conscious?  How is your pillow?  Your bed?  Do you sleep on your stomach?  Do you do posture friendly exercises?  How long do you sit each day?

The Problem with Dentists…

Think of it this way…if you decided that you were never going to brush your teeth, floss or use mouth wash, how healthy would your teeth be?  How many appointments would you make each year with the dentist?  Is it possible that if you never took care of your teeth and only relied on your dentist that you might start saying the same thing about dentists that you say about chiropractors?  “The problem with dentists is that once you start going, you just have to keep going back.”

grannystretch1000 Different stretches…

Now the whole dentist/chiropractor analogy falls apart when you start talking about how to take care of your spine.  A dentist can stand up in front of 1000 people and teach them all how to brush their teeth.  Simple.  Chiropractors can’t do that.  Each individual person has unique stresses on their body which create unique body imbalances.  So 1000 different people may very well need to stretch 1000 different ways.  YIKES!

Generic Stretches/Exercises…

The individual nature of neck/back stretches and exercises is why most doctors don’t take the time to talk to their patients about it.  They simply don’t have time.  So instead of taking the time to teach people how to understand their body and learn how to stretch, they give them a generic set of stretches and exercises.  Using a generic set of stretches and exercises is one of the 3 Big Mistakes people make all the time and it is rarely effective.
